The Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District (SMCSD) provides wastewater collection, conveyance and treatment services to the City of Sausalito and unincorporated areas within the District’s boundaries including Marin City and floating homes. Wastewater conveyance and treatment service is also provided on a contract basis to Tamalpais Community Services District, including the Muir Woods National Monument and to the National Park Service (Forts Baker, Barry and Cronkhite, Marine Mammal Center and Cavallo Point Resort). Dry weather flow is currently 1 MGD.
The treatment plant is located within the San Francisco Bay adjacent to a steep hillside. This configuration makes upgrades challenging and requires a high functioning operations staff to ensure continuous water quality compliance. The plant is also located on Federal land within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The SMCSD’s treatment plant was originally constructed in 1953 with major upgrades to provide secondary treatment in 1986 and the addition of tertiary treatment in 1990. The most recent major plant upgrade was completed in 2020 which added a plant headworks, 600,000 gallons of equalization storage and a second primary clarifier. In addition, primary and secondary treatment capacity was increased from 6 MGD to 9 MGD, and tertiary treatment was increased from 1 MGD to 6 MGD. Further improvements were made to upgrade electrical service and improve reliability of backup generation.
