- The plant treats an average of 63 million gallons of wastewater per day, with the capacity to handle up to 320 million gallons during wet weather!
- Resource Recovery
- Power generation that exceeds the plants requirements
- Recycled Water
The tour will be given by a member of the SYP Committee who works at the plant so they will be able to give a comprehensive explanation for how various aspects of the facility relate to students and young professionals. The tour will begin at 3:00 PM and there will be a Happy Hour after the tour at 5 PM at Night Heron in Oakland, CA. - Please arrive at 2:30 for check-in for the tour

Looking forward to seeing you there!
Click Here for Flyer Since 1951, EBMUD has provided wastewater
treatment services at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant to protect public
health and the San Francisco Bay. EBMUD’s 88-square-mile wastewater service
area is home to 740,000 people who live in Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, El
Cerrito, Emeryville, Kensington, Oakland, Piedmont, and parts of Richmond.
EBMUD started secondary treatment in 1978, onsite power generation in 1985, the
Resource Recovery (R2) program (i.e., co-digestion) in 2002, and the East
Bayshore Recycled Water project in 2008.
This tour will provide an overview of EBMUD’s Main Wastewater Treatment Plant,
including a walk-through of preliminary treatment, primary treatment, secondary
treatment, wet weather storage, anaerobic digestion, high-strength waste
receiving, and power generation. Some notable achievements at the MWWTP include
1) in 2012, EBMUD MWWTP became the first WWTP in North America to produce more
renewable energy onsite than needed to run the facility, and 2) since 2020,
EBMUD has utilized existing high purity oxygen activated sludge (HPOAS) for
full-scale biological nutrient removal to maximize nitrogen removal during the
dry season. Join the CWEA SFBS Students & Young Professionals in July to
learn more about EBMUD’s wastewater treatment and resource recovery! Special Note SYP Committee Member will guide the tour to
explain the various aspects of the plant and how it relates to students and
young professionals.
Happy Hour After the tour, the group will get together at
Night Heron in Oakland for drinks and great company!
