Many organizations rely on lagging metrics to track performance, which, like looking in the rear-view mirror, limits opportunities for proactive improvement. By contrast, leading indicators empower us to reduce risks before they become problems, allowing for greater flexibility as we navigate capital projects, daily operations, and organizational growth.
The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) released the groundbreaking ASSP/ANSI Z16.1-2022 Safety and Health Metrics and Performance Measures standard in February 2022. This new consensus standard draws on two decades of best practices, developed by Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) professionals and others, to define key performance indicators (KPIs), also known as key success indicators (KSIs).
What sets this standard apart is its integration of critical Risk Management (RM) elements, offering a holistic approach to aligning various professional functions across organizations. While the focus is on EHS, these risk management principles extend across disciplines, providing a versatile framework for evaluating and enhancing organizational performance.
This session will explore key EHS and Risk Management definitions, as well as practical examples of how leading indicators can be applied to capital construction projects. Beyond EHS, the leading indicator approach is adaptable for other areas of your organization, including finance, quality, and engineering, offering innovative ways to enhance performance across the board.
