Description:
This
presentation will provide an overview of two water quality improvement projects
implemented in the Ballona Creek Watershed. Throughout Los Angeles County,
municipalities are responsible for improving water quality in alignment with
the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit. Watershed Management
Programs (WMPs) were developed to help guide implementation efforts over the
next several decades.
This presentation will focus on two constructed water
quality improvement projects in the Ballona Creek Watershed that improve water
quality while providing multiple benefits. The Mesmer Low Flow Diversion
Project in Culver City is a regional dry-weather capture project that conveys
runoff to the sewer for treatment at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant,
which will lead to eventual reuse. The Burton Way Median Green Street in
Beverly Hills includes three storm drain diversions, just under a mile of
bioswales for infiltration, and a subsurface storage system that allows runoff
to be used for median irrigation. The presentation will include discussion on
the background (why these projects are needed), proposed improvements, water
quality benefits, construction, and lessons learned.
