Hear from an EPA representative on practices for sample collection and analytical approaches to address microplastic pollution. Recent literature has shown that microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment and very commonly found in environmental water samples. Despite this the field is challenged by a lack of standard practices for sample collection and a lack of standardized analytical approaches. Older methods have been shown to be very inaccurate and imprecise. Newer methods show much promise for analytical reproducibility. These newer methods should be adopted for more routine monitoring practices.

Learning Objective(s):
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss the extent, the mechanisms and resulting potential for harm from microplastic pollution.
  • Describe the relative contribution of wastewater to microplastic pollution.
  • Identify current policy positions in CA and within US EPA.

The Understanding Microplastic Pollution presentation (60 minutes) will be followed by a TCP update presentation by Norah Duffy, CWEA's Director of Certification and Northern San Joaquin Section section business meeting.
