SFBS May Dinner Meeting - Optimizing Power Use and Performance for Nutrient Removal

Over the last 15 years, there has been much discussion and regulatory activity around reducing nutrient loads to the SF Bay. The 3rd Nutrient Watershed Permit is expected to require approximately 40 percent reduction of inorganic nitrogen to the Bay. This level of reduction requires significant capital investment for most dischargers, as established by the BACWA Nutrient Reduction Study (2018) and subsequent projects. Power usage will also increase, as BNR plants typically use 30-40 percent more power than non-BNR facilities. Secondary expansions and intensification with new technologies are appropriate nutrient management strategies for many agencies. However, before committing to large capital projects, some dischargers may benefit and be able to reduce the required investment if optimization is performed first.

This presentation will review the “low hanging fruit” and how agencies can leverage optimization tools to incorporate into their nutrient management strategy. Key topics to be covered include:

  • The role advanced automation can play in maximizing nutrient removal and reducing power usage
  • Strategies to improve settleability that can unlock capacity for nutrient removal
  • Low DO/SND Operation
  • How bioaugmentation can help with nutrient removal


Speaker Bio:

Andre Gharagozian is an Associate Vice President at Carollo and serves as the regional process lead for wastewater in northern California. He has over 25 years of experience and is a seasoned process engineer with a wide range of experience from facility and master planning, process analysis and design, troubleshooting, operational assistance, and training. Andre’s expertise is in process modeling and nitrogen removal with an emphasis on activated sludge, hybrid systems, and sidestream treatment. He is currently managing the design of an Anita Mox sidestream system for the City of Fresno’s 90 mgd RWRF.
