Interpretation of Temporal and Spatial Trends from SARS-CoV-2 RNA in Wastewater: a Case Study from the San Francisco Bay Area

Research has shown that wastewater monitoring for the SARS-CoV-2 virus has the potential to detect signs of disease trends in a community before information from clinical surveillance is available. It is a promising method for early detection of local outbreaks. Researchers at UC Berkeley are conducting ongoing research with wastewater samples to improve detection limits for SARS-CoV-2, identify and track viral strains, quantify error associated with sampling at different scales, and track the spread of the virus in the community. In March 2020, Lauren Kennedy, Environmental Engineering Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, began working on a project monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in San Francisco Bay Area wastewater. She has contributed to the development of methods for tracking and data analysis for the COVID-WEB regional monitoring program. She will share her expertise and insights on monitoring the global pandemic through this work.
