Please join CWEA LABS for a presentation by Russ Vakharia, Supervising Engineer at the LA County Sanitation Districts, on the construction of a new 7-mile long effluent tunnel—the longest single drive pressurized face tunnel ever constructed in California!  He will discuss construction challenges facing the tunnel, which has over 30 curves, will go through a variety of heterogenous ground conditions, is located under the water table, and will experience significant areas of squeezing ground.

The Sanitation Districts operates the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, which treats wastewater from over 5 million people in the Los Angeles basin. The JWPCP currently relies on two tunnels—over 60 and 80 years old—to convey treated wastewater from Carson, CA to the ocean. The new tunnel is being constructed to ensure the reliability and capacity of the system and address aging infrastructure, seismic, and overflow concerns associated with the old tunnels.
