We are in the midst of a mega drought, punctuated by one- and two-year wetter periods. This is the leading edge of the weather whiplash that climate change is bringing to California. While all attention is on drought and expanding water recycling, how can we also assure that our infrastructure investments will stand the test of much wetter wet periods? Expanding water recycling and achieving direct potable reuse is forcing more conversation between water supply and sanitation communities. What opportunities does that create to more thoughtfully meet the needs of humans and the ecosystems of which we are a part? Debbie will put drought in the larger weather whiplash context and will zoom out to watershed scale and system function to identify opportunities that may not be obvious when focused on urban water and wastewater management.
